Introduction of Suzhou Secondary Library

Suzhou Secondary Library is a practical project of the municipal government which draws great attention from the municipal officials and the citizens. This library lies in the dynamic island area, and on the northern side of Huayuan Road and western side of Guangjibei Road. Suzhou Secondary Library learns from the advanced international experience, faces the future development of libraries, aims at the domestic first-class level and stands with Suzhou characteristics. This library will be a modern library with Suzhou charm, and in line with Suzhou economical and cultural development, meeting the future cultural demands of the citizens. It will become a landmark building in the northern part of Suzhou, and help to create the third space in Suzhou City. This library will raise the level of urban culture, expand cultural influence, enhance social harmony and lead the development of the city.

The total investment of Suzhou Secondary Library is 480 million Yuan. In 2014, the project design was open for international bidding, and the design jointly done by Southeast University Architectural Design Institute Co., Ltd and Germany GMP architectural firm stood out to be the final design for Suzhou Secondary Library. The planned construction area is 45,332 square meters in a total of 7 floors, out of which 1 floor is underground and 6 floors are above ground. The library is divided into two sections, the southern section and the northern section. The facade of the building is like rotating paper, and on the glass facades lie horizontal metal sheets, which creates a ripple effect on the exquisite architectural shapes.

As a new part of Suzhou Library, Suzhou Secondary Library has function connection with the original library, and they are also complementary in each other's development. This is a new concept library with integration between reading & studying and cultural entertainment. This will be a warm, comfortable, open and inclusive public space, and a platform providing high level culture and art appreciation and cultural consumption. This will make the libraries the best leisure place for public activities except for people's working place and their home, and this place can fully meet the public's demand on studying, interactive communication, culture and leisure.

Suzhou Secondary Library has three major functions: public library service, document storage & distribution and supplementary service. Four highlights and features stand out: to build the first large-scale intelligent library, to create a "Reading Enjoying Space" that aspires children, to create a new high-end information service platform, and to create a warm and comfortable public library for the citizens.

The public library service function are mainly concentrates in the southern section of the project. Since the libraries are in the transition from paper carrier to full media, the main functions of future libraries will no longer be providing books, but will be developing toward "supporting human knowledge and creating the environment". There will be transition from the streamline of books to the streamline of information, and there will be transition from providing reading facilities to providing learning environment. This library fully embodies the people-oriented library service concept.

The document storage and distribution area occupies the first floor to the third floor of the northern section of the project. The first intelligent domestic high-density library with maximum usage of literature storage space will be built, and it will be able to contain more than 7 million books. While saving space, this library will take the lead in intelligent management of public library service. In addition, this library also includes an ancient book storage, logistics and editing center which all meet the national standards, all these will fully meet the demand of general library and branch library system operation and public library development.

The supplementary services are distributed throughout the project area. The digital cinema, readers' restaurant, cultural supermarket, leisure book bar and other supplementary service facilities all help to create new highlights in cultural consumption, and help to meet the multi-level, diversified and personalized cultural demands.
